PREVIEW: Hillsboro girls track focused on relays

Three returning seniors and a strong freshman base will play a key role in the formation of relay teams this season, according to Hillsboro High School girls track coach Anthony Amore.

“That might be where we can outrun some of the other schools at league meets,” he said. “We’ve got some freshmen coming into this year that will really help some of our relay teams, and some of the returning members mixed in with the freshmen will give us the opportunity do that this year,” he said.

Amore said freshman Jaeleigh Hart and several other newcomers show promise.

“Some of the freshman coming in this year could really be a huge benefit to us on relay teams,” he said. “As far as who all is going to be on it, that’s still to be shown… We’re still working out what events the girls are going to do this year… I’d like to let the girls kind of choose what they want to do. We’re just going to see where they’re at, and we’ll work through that. With the weather the way it’s been, we haven’t really had a chance to see the girls out on the track.”

Amore said returning seniors Mallory Overberg, Emily Earlie and Hope Tira each bring something to the table.

“Emily is one of our long jumpers,” he said. “I’m hoping she can improve her personal record and place higher than she did last year in the SCOL meets… Mallory is a track athlete I had as a sophomore. She got injured during her sophomore year, but she’s going to be helpful in some of the mid-distance runs and distance relays… For Hope Tira, I have big expectations for her on the sprint side of things, as far as being a good anchor for relays and being a good lead-off for relays, as well as competing in pole vault.”

Amore said focusing on the individual is a key to success.

“Each of the girls has a different goal for themselves and different expectations,” he said. “As a coach, I want to help the girls believe in themselves to a point where they can reach those goals and compete.”

Currently, Amore said he’s focused on making improvements in overall strength and technical skills.

“We’re trying to work on our strength and agility,” he said. “We’ve got the Barnhouse Center now, and with the help of some of the coaches out there, we’re continuously working to improve on some of those things.

“I think my biggest expectation this year is for the girls to compete at SCOL meets and actually come away with something. Last year, we weren’t able to win any of the events; I’d like for us to win at least something this year.”
