‘Elvis’ back in town

After three years of cancelling or moving the date of its annual show featuring Elvis Presley tribute artist Tyler Christopher, the Highland County Senior Citizens Center is back on schedule and will host Christopher for the seventh time on Saturday, March 25.

“We have this every year and it’s to bring in funds for the operation of the senior center so we can continue our mission of serving the senior members of our community,” said Mechell Karnes, executive director of senior center. “It’s like an authentic Elvis concert — the band starts playing and then he takes the stage. When you add the live band, along with Tyler’s voice, dancing and costumes, you have what I think is an electric concert.”

Tickets are $40 for front row seats, $36 for second row seats and $32 for general admission. Popcorn, tea, lemonade and water come with all tickets. Front row ticket holders also get light desserts and second row ticket holders get “mini treats.”

“Because this is a benefit, you’re making a donation to the senior center and in exchange you’re getting a night of great, quality entertainment,” Karnes said.

The two-hour show starts with Christopher playing Elvis tunes from the 1950s. Later, he transforms to ’60s songs and closes with ’70s Elvis hits. Christopher changes costumes along the way, he tosses scarves into the crowd, and there’s a dance floor for those in attendance.

“This is the seventh year we’ve had him because it’s such a success for our organization and people love the show. We have people come from Kentucky, Cincinnati and everywhere, and they are often repeat visitors,” Karnes said. “Everyone is invited and we appreciate everyone supporting us.”

She said that before the COVID-19 pandemic the senior center always hosted Christopher on the last Saturday in March and now the concert is back on schedule along with plans for a long list of other fundraisers planned throughout the rest of the year.

Tickets can be purchased with cash or check at the senior center, 185 Muntz St., Hillsboro, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday. They can also be purchased online at highlandseniors.com.
