The Highland County Senior Citizens Center at 185 Muntz Street in Hillsboro will be holding its “Healthy Halloween Senior Expo” at the center on Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. followed by free bingo.
“It’s basically a resource or information fair,” said Mechell Karnes, the center’s executive director. “We want people to be able to accumulate and gather information to help them navigate whatever life situations they have with information about everyday things like banking and healthcare.”
Karnes said more than 50 businesses and organizations from Highland, Adams, Brown and other surrounding counties will be at the event.
“You don’t have to be from Hillsboro or Highland County to attend the event, and you do not have to be a member of the senior center to attend,” said Karnes.
Although the event is free to attend, Karnes encouraged people to bring cash for lunch, with the proceeds benefiting the center’s home-delivered meals program. Tickets for raffles will also be available with the proceeds going to benefit the center’s operations.
“Each business is going to bring a free prize with them for people to sign up for, and the senior center has over 150 free prizes to give away as well on top of what the businesses are bringing,” said Karnes.
There is also going to be a costume contest for adults, so participants are encouraged to dress up with winners selected for first, second, and third place. “We’ve had so many cool costumes throughout the years, so we encourage them to dress up if they want,” said Karnes.
The event will also have live music, and the businesses will bring decorated pumpkins with the public voting for the favorite.
“We had over 200 people attend last year, so we’re looking for another nice-sized crowd,” said Karnes.
“We’re also going to have a dish soap derby,” said Karnes. “It’s a competition where whoever brings the most dish soap can with a $100 gift card. It supports our kitchen for our home-delivered meals program.”
