Writing seminar scheduled at Hillsboro library

A local writer/editor with decades of experience in the publishing world will be hosting a seminar at the Hillsboro library.

Carol Cartaino will be discussing “How to Edit Your Own Writing” on Thursday, Oct. 6. The seminar begins at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s downstairs meeting room. No registration is needed for the seminar.

Cartaino said that the seminar will address a range of aspects, from smaller edits, such as word choice, to larger edits, such as structure.

“Although there seems to be a widespread myth that writing pours out in inspiration … all writing benefits from editing,” Cartaino said.

“It is difficult to edit yourself,” she added. “Most writers know this.”

However, she said, self-editing is not impossible.

“You can do it,” Cartaino said. “There are a lot of things you can do yourself.”

Cartaino is originally from New Jersey, where she was an editor in the Trade Division of Prentice-Hall, Inc. for 10 years. Following that, she came to Ohio and was the editor-in-chief of Writer’s Digest Books. She has also given speeches and workshops on writing in 12 states.
