Adena starting sexual, domestic violence support group

Sexual and domestic violence is a serious issue happening right here our region. According to the Ohio Department of Safety’s Office of Criminal Justice Services, there were 684 cases of domestic violence reported in Ross County in 2016.

Adena Health System knows following a sexual or domestic incident, it’s helpful for victims to have support in their own community. That is why Adena caregivers are taking action and making it easier and possible for victims to access support and resources close to home.

Adena’s Sexual Assault Survivor Advocates are launching a new program called HOW, Helping Other Women. HOW is a free, six-week, peer-to-peer women’s support group for victims of sexual and domestic violence. Classes will be held on Thursdays, beginning Fe. 16 at The Carver Community Center, 165 W. Fourth St., Chillicothe from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The support group is a safe place for women to come and share personal issues, experiences and struggles. The program is also designed to teach women skills and techniques that will help them cope and grow as an individual.

“I am looking forward to hosting this group and being surrounded by brave incredible women who are survivors and being able to connect them with peers experiencing the same issues,” said Brittany Knox, Adena sexual assault survivor advocate. “Together, they can find friendship, support and resources. I am excited to be a part of this adventure, and look forward to doing something for our community because sexual assault and domestic violence happen way too often.”

Each week women will discuss different topics and issues that victims of assault may experience. After each discussion the group will participate in workshop activities and receive resources related to that week’s focus. Food and drinks will also be provided.

Participants do not need to attend every weekly discussion to partake in the HOW program. However, registration is required. Registration can be completed by simply sending an email to [email protected]. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and are required to fill out a questionnaire before and after the support group.
