Shorter Chaple celebrating 177 years

The Shorter Chapel AME Church in Greenfield will celebrate 177 years in the community on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 3:30 p.m.

The theme for the day is “Building God’s Kingdom, One Brick at a Time” Hebrews 3: 4-6. The guest minister will be the Rev. Bill Roberts and his congregation from the Bethel AME Church in Middletown. He will be accompanied by his choir and members of his church.

The Shorter Chapel AME Church was first organized in 1840. A log church building was constructed in 1843 on Fifth Street in Greenfield. In 1865, just after the Civil War, the church purchased a building from the Free Presbyterian Church. That church building was destroyed and rebuilt at the present location at Second and North streets.

All are invited to share in this worship experience, no matter what the denomination or church you come from. Shorter Chaple members will have a grand celebration, giving thanks to God for the great things He has done and continues to do.
