Great Oaks wins award

On Oct. 11, the Great Oaks Summer Career Camps were recognized as the Outstanding Multi District Program by Ohio School Boards Association/Southwest Region (SWOSBA) at the Southwest Region Conference held at the Miami Valley Career Technology Center.

The camps have been running for three years and counting, attracting 230 students. The camps have provided prospective ninth and 10th grade students with opportunities to learn about the programs that Great Oaks offer, giving more insight on what career-technical education provides.

Since these students are not yet eligible to apply at Great Oaks, this program provides an opportunity to explore skill or career fields before attending. Students have been able to interact with other students from various school districts as they participate in activities, experiential learning, and trips to Great Oak campuses, job sites and local businesses.

For a week students were able to learn about subject areas such as health, automotive technology exercise science, cosmetology, culinary arts, construction, digital arts and more as they worked with Great Oak instructors, professionals and in the career labs.

The Great Oaks Summer Career Camps have left a lasting impact in the lives of students who were involved with it before they become eligible to attend Great Oaks itself.
