In the same location that its widely-known KAMP Dovetail will unfold early next summer, Supplemental Assistance to the Handicapped (SATH) will hold its fifth annual Halloween Hustle 5K Run & Fun Walk on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Rocky Fork State Park Campgrounds.
Registration will start at 9 a.m. the day of the event at the Dovetail Activity Area, where KAMP is centered the third week of each June. The race will start at 10 a.m.
“Walkers, runners and wheelchairs are invited to come out and help KAMP Dovetail with their support,” SATH Executive Director Linda Allen said in a news release. “Medals will be give to the top three individuals in men’s, women’s and walker categories. Tickets will be available to purchase for a raffle prize.”
The run/walk is held to help finance KAMP Dovetail, a five-day, four-night summer camp for children with special needs that has been held for 35 years now. Last year, more than 750 individuals, including children with special needs, volunteers and staff members, enjoyed a fun-filled week of outdoor camping experiences. SATH underwrites the cost of the camp through fundraisers like the run/walk that it holds throughout the year.
Allen has said it takes around $60,000 to pull off the camp each June.
The idea for the run/walk came a few years back when a group of women that work at KAMP Dovetail, and that Allen calls her five Ks, came up with the idea for some type of run to try to help fund Dovetail.
“I like to tap into all kinds of things people like to do and a lot of people like to run. What better way to tap into a different part of the community that maybe wouldn’t come to Turkey Bingo, a sweetheart dance or something like that?” Allen previously asked.
Registration for the Halloween Hustle is $25 for those who preregister by Oct. 16 at www.kampdovetail.com. Registration the day of the race is $30.
