Updated: HUBA Christmas celebration, parade

The Hillsboro Uptown Business Association’s annual Christmas parade drew a large crowd to the uptown area Saturday evening despite cold temperatures, with six floats winning theme prizes and two winners claiming victory earlier in the day in the first-ever Ugly Christmas Sweater 5K charity run-walk.

Joe Mahan, president of HUBA, said the day’s events were a success for the organization, the participants and the onlookers.

Mahan said there were 31 entrees in this year’s parade, which began an hour earlier than last year’s first-ever nighttime illuminated event. He thanked several individuals and organizations for their assistance.

“The Highland County Amateur Radio Club really helps out,” said Mahan. “We couldn’t do it without them.”

Mahan said several HUBA members helped at the fairground, where parade entrees line up. He also thanked Brian and Lori Vance and Alex Butler for handling emcee duties as the floats and entrees made their way to the center of town.

Also on hand Saturday were members of Hillsboro Student Council, who recently provided the Christmas tree on the Highland County Courthouse lawn and who provided refreshments in front of the courthouse, including hot chocolate, throughout the brisk evening.

Mahan said Noah Richmond won the adult category of the new 5K run-walk, while Larkin Friend won in the youth category.

Winners in the parade categories were:

• Best Commercial Entry: first place, Lowe’s; second place, South Central Power Company.

• Most Original: first place, Daystar Christian Center; second place, Carmean Family Traditions.

• Most Humorous: first place, Shriner Hillbilly Clan #8; second place, Southside Praise and Worship.

• Best Theme: first place, Sunrise, Sunset Child Care; second place, Appearances Salon.

The theme for the parade was “A Dr. Seuss Christmas.”
