Highland County Recycling Outreach Specialist Heidi Devine updated the Highland County Board of Commissioners Wednesday morning on recycling in Highland County, detailing a new bin location, a revolving grant for cleanup projects and upcoming recycling events.
A new recycling bin in Lynchburg will allow area residents to reduce their carbon footprint, according to Devine. The new bin is located on Main Street in Lynchburg just north of Bobbitt Street, and is currently open for public use.
Other bin locations in Highland County include Terry’s Grocery in Dodsonville on U.S. 50; the Greenfield Sunoco at 950 N. Washington St.; the Hillsboro Sunoco at 489 E. Main St.; 131 Catherine St. in Hillsboro; the HI-TEC Center near the Bureau of Motor Vehicles at 1575 N. High St. in Hillsboro; the Hillsboro Board of Education office at 39 Willettsville Pike; Premier Grain in Leesburg at 116 S. Fairfield St. and the Leesburg Marathon station at 11070 State Route 506; the old feed mill in Mowrystown at 106 W. Main St.; the New Market Ameristop station at 5828 W. New Market Rd.; and the Paint Township building near Rocky Fork Lake at 12470 U.S. 50.
According to a news release from Devine, the following items can be placed in any of the county-sponsored recycling bins: plastic bottles and jugs (with bases larger than openings), glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans, steel cans and lids, office paper and envelopes, junk mail, newspapers and inserts, magazines, telephone books, catalogs, flattened paperboard and cardboard boxes. Rumpke collects all the recyclables from the bins and sorts them at its facilities, Devine said.
Devine also said a revolving grant of up to $5,000 is now available from the Highland County Board of Commissioners and the Highland County Recycling Office for solid waste and recycling activities. According to release, those eligible for the grant include municipal corporations, villages, townships, state colleges, park districts, health districts and nonprofits within Highland County.
The grant can be used for projects such as cleanup of nuisance properties or curbside recycling programs. Whichever entity wins the grant will be expected to provide a 50-percent match. The grant application deadline is May 1 of this year.
According to Devine, the recycling office has planned two major recycling events this summer. A free electronics waste disposal event will be held Aug. 5 at Premier Grain in Leesburg, and a tire disposal event will be held Aug. 19, the location of which has yet to be announced. Devine said the tire disposal will be free for a certain amount of tires, but after that there may be a charge.

In other action, the commissioners Wednesday morning approved the resignation of Lisa Wishart from the Highland County Airport Authority. Board president Shane Wilkin said the commissioners will expect a formal letter from Tim Roberts expressing interest in replacing Wishart before taking further action.
The commissioners entered into executive session at the end of the meeting to discuss a subject related to economic development. No further action was taken.
