Greenfield 5th graders will stay in town

Where fifth graders in the Greenfield Exempted Village School District attend classes is being restructured, superintendent Joe Wills said Tuesday.

Currently, fifth graders who have attended Greenfield Elementary in grades K-4 are bused to Rainsboro or Buckskin elementaries for the fifth grade, then return to Greenfield for grades 6-12. Wills said that has been the district’s process for the last 17 or 18 years.

But beginning next year those fifth graders who previously attended elementary school in Greenfield will remain there for the fifth grade.

“We believe we have space in the elementary school in Greenfield and can keep those fifth grade students here, rather than moving them out for a year,” Wills said.

Students who attend grades K-4 at Rainsboro or Buckskin will remain there for the fifth grade.

There are plans to install new sounds systems at both the McClain football/soccer field and high school gymnasium, according to Wills. He said the plan is to have the new system in the gym installed and working by graduation this year. He said quotes are still being considered for the outdoor stadium, but the plan is to have a new sound system in place there by the fall football/soccer seasons.

The board of education honored members of the McClain quick recall team, Wills said, for recently winning the South Central Ohio League championship. He said the team will travel to the Small School National Championship Tournament in Rosemont, Ill. from April 28-30.

The board also approved the following through a consent agenda:

• Resignations of Deanne Link, curriculum director, effective June 27, for the purpose of retirement; and Connie Brown, cafeteria worker, effective May 31, for the purpose of retirement.

• Agreed to let the Highland County Board of DD use the McClain pool to provide aquatic therapy for children 6 months to 3 years old for one year beginning April 1, 2017.

• Recommended the following for employment, pending completion of required documentation: certified personnel – Blayne Weddington, high school music; classified substitutes – Kim Crawford, BASC aide; Elizabeth Collie, aide/monitor, clerical, cafeteria; Thomas Clary, custodial; Kyle Bennett, bus driver; volunteers – Nick McNeal, track assistant; Tati Weaks, track assistant; Jhaela Coleman, track assistant.
