The third annual Amazing Race of Highland County is just around the corner, set for Aug. 8 at Liberty Park.
The event the past two years has raised $26,000 that has all gone back to the community through local nonprofits.
This year, according to committee member Jordan Anne Phillips, there are 22 nonprofits that will benefit from the event’s proceeds.
As previously reported, the race was began by local doctor DJ Jamieson after he competed in similar events elsewhere. He said he thought it was a way to help the county.
“It’s just my little contribution to the county, and a lot of people on the committee feel the same way,” Jamieson said previously. “And it’s fun.”
The Amazing Race of Highland County is a two-person team running or run/walk event. It is a cross-country race, and about seven to eight kilometers long.
Along the race route will be 20 roadblocks consisting of challenges and tasks. “These will reward your balance, intelligence, coordination, memory, luck, and sporting and gaming skills,” according to race information. “Your team must complete the challenge before continuing on with the race. You will need to have your bib checked off before leaving the roadblock.
“The captain at the roadblock is in charge, and all teamsmust obey their instructions. They have the authority to make all decisions regarding penalties, etc., at their station. They will be instructed to keep the competition fair, and to make sure the race runs as smoothly as possible.”
Entry fee for a two-person team to compete is $110, but that increases to $120 on Aug. 1. The fee includes a race shirt and a race bag.
The race will start at 10 a.m. and will begin and end at Liberty Park in Hillsboro. Individual team start times will be staggered.
There will be food and drinks and a party after the race. The Blue Steel Band has also volunteered to perform live during and after the race.
“You will likely get a little wet. You will definitely have fun,” the committee said previously in a news release.
“We would love for this event to grow each year and to get more organizations involved,” Phillips said.
Family and friends, and the community in general, are encouraged to come out and cheer everyone on during the event. Food and beverages will be available for sale.
