Barrera: Man arrested after Leesburg pursuit; two still at large

Two suspects are still at large and one is in jail after a pursuit early Wednesday morning in Leesburg ended with authorities finding a loaded shotgun and items commonly used for manufacturing meth in the suspects’ vehicle, according to Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera.

According to a press release, the sheriff’s office received a call around 5 a.m. from a Leesburg business reporting a suspicious vehicle nearby. Several minutes later, a deputy in the area observed the vehicle and attempted to stop it, but the vehicle fled, traveling east on SR 28, according to Barrera.

Barrera said the pursuit turned onto Wilson Road and crossed Centerfield Road, then the vehicle traveled onto federal property. The vehicle then drove off the roadway into a field and stopped, Barrera said.

Two subjects exited the vehicle and fled on foot into the field, while a third, identified as Daniel Spangler, 44, of Frankfort, Ross County, was taken into custody at the scene, according to Barrera. Barrera told The Times-Gazette Wednesday afternoon that the two who fled on foot are still on the loose.

Barrera said a loaded shotgun and components often used in the making of methamphetamine were found in the vehicle.

Spangler is currently incarcerated at the Highland County Justice Center, and has been charged with illegal manufacturing, Barrera said, although further charges may be filed.

Barrera said the matter remains under investigation.
