A coon hunt event billed as the “biggest hunt of the summer” that started Tuesday wrapped up over the weekend at the Highland County Fairgrounds as the CHKC Little World Hunt concluded its hunt.

Scott Lewis, one of the event’s local organizers, said that about 400 hunters participated in the hunt, which featured a $20,000 winner-take-all grand prize. Lewis said participants have booked every hotel room and have spent thousands of dollars with local merchants.

Lewis said there are plans to host a similar event in July when a new pickup truck will be awarded to the winner through an agreement with Jerry Haag Motors.

On Friday, one of the 4-H youngster’s cake projects was to be auctioned to help them raise some additional money. One sold for $500 Thursday night, said Lewis.

The event drew nearly 400 hounds from all over the U.S.

“There were folks from as far west as Texas and from Connecticut to Florida,” said Lewis.

Organizers also teamed up with members of the local Highland County Rabbit Council and gave them 100 percent of the proceeds from the food they prepared. The $3,700 will be used to buy new rabbit cages for the local 4-H.

This is our second annual event and we look forward to hosting the event again next year,” said Lewis.

“This event has the potential to make a huge financial impact for our community. We filled every hotel/motel, cabin and cottage available this year,” said Lewis. “I think it will be even bigger next year.”
