Two local residents are facing charges after a two-county high-speed chase Wednesday that allegedly saw a driver sideswipe a vehicle, drive through a field, flee on foot and then escape after he was originally apprehended.
Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera said the pursuit began at 12:03 p.m. when a deputy on patrol turned on a vehicle in the area of Fairground Road. The fleeing vehicle headed toward John Street, the driver did not stop for the deputy pursuing him, and the chase was on.
The pursuit continued on the streets of Hillsboro, heading toward John Street, to North West Street and then south toward West Main Street. According to Barrera, the fleeing vehicle sideswiped a vehicle on West Main Street at Glenn Street. A cruiser from the Hillsboro Police Department had joined the chase by that time and stopped to assist a victim in the vehicle than had been sideswiped.
The pursuit continued westbound on U.S. Route 50, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph, according to scanner traffic. The fleeing vehicle continued into Brown County where the driver turned onto Murray Corner Road, traveling south at that time. The vehicle then came back into Highland County, turned onto SR 134, then turned south and traveled through a farm field before making its way back onto the roadway, Barrera said.
Upon reaching Buford, the vehicle turned west onto Greenbush Road, then turned left onto Buford-Bardwell Road and continued west back into Brown County, according to Barrera.
The fleeing vehicle crossed over SR 68, the sheriff said, came to a residential area in Brown County, and eventually stopped on Meadow Glenn Road. At that point the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
Barrera said Ryan Emil Petrey, 30, was apprehended by several Brown County sheriff’s deputies inside a home.
But the episode was not over yet. Once the Brown County deputies placed Petrey in a cruiser, Barrera said he escaped from it. The sheriff said that by that time Petrey’s hands were handcuffed behind his back and he only made it about 50 yards before he was apprehended again.
That final attempt to flee led to a charge of escape in Brown County. Petrey was being held in the Brown County Jail on no bond with a holder from Highland County, according to online records.
Also taken into custody was a female passenger in the fleeing vehicle identified as Carissa D. Scott, 24, of Hillsboro. She is being charged with obstructing justice and was transported to the Highland County Justice Center.
Petrey had a felony warrant from Franklin County and other warrants from Highland County.
Barrera said there were no injuries as a result of the pursuit.
The incident remains under investigation and Barrera said further charges are pending in Brown County.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Mount Orab Police Department and Mowrystown Police Department also assisted in the pursuit.
