SOGS will explore early military records

Early military records from the Revolutionary War to the just before World War I will be the topic when the Southern Ohio Genealogical Society holds its first fall program on Thursday, Oct. 11.

The guest speaker will be James Phillabaum, a retired firefighter/paramedic who worked for the Middletown Fire Department for 25 years. He has been involved in genealogy and family history since the late 1960s and has been giving genealogy presentations throughout the Southern Ohio area for more than 20 years. Phillabaum will present a program titled Early Military Records — Revolutionary War to Pre-WWI.

This workshop will explore the available military records from the 18th and 19th centuries. Records to be discussed will be various service, pension (both federal and state), bounty land and colonial records. The conflicts that will be covered include: Colonial Wars (French & Indian War, etc.), Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, Indian Wars, Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection. He will also cover the holdings of the National Archives, and how to access those records. State records will also be discussed, according to Dwight Crum, Southern Ohio Genealogical Society (SOGS) vice president of programs.

All SOGS programs are open to the publicThe Oct. 11 will begin at 7 p.m. in Hillsboro at the Highland County Service Center Conference Room, 1487 N. High St., or the building that houses the Highland County Health Department. Enter through the doors that lead to the health department.

Upcoming fall meetings will include the following: Nov. 8 – Institutional records from Ohio’s Prisons, Asylums, and Children’s Homes, Liz Plummer, Ohio History Connection, outreach specialist; Dec. 13 – Christmas Gathering and Dinner, Highland House Museum, Hillsboro, required by Dec. 7.
