Vets event, turkey bingo

Friday and Saturday will be busy at the Highland County Senior Citizens Center with a special program honoring area veterans Friday night and the always popular turkey bingo Saturday afternoon.

Mechell Frost, the senior citizens center executive director, said the Friday night event is welcome to all veterans and their families.

“Dinner is at 5:30 p.m. and around 6:30 p.m. our guest speaker will be Judge Rocky Coss,” she said. “The dinner for the veterans is free, but for all others it’s seven dollars and those proceeds will be given to VFW Post 9094 for their veteran’s relief fund.”

Frost said the Highland County Honor Guard will be attendance as well, and that the program is a way for the senior citizens center to recognize the service of veterans, whether their duty station was foreign or domestic.

“We want to honor every veteran and their families for their service,” she said, “but we do ask that those planning to attend RSVP before Friday at 937-393-4745 to let us know how many will be in their party.”

Hospice of Hope, Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield, Highland Auto Service and Classic Realty are sponsors for the veteran’s dinner program.

Then Saturday, the senior citizens center changes gears with an event designed to help Highland County chefs get a handle on their Thanksgiving dinner plans.

“We have a ton of turkey’s we’re giving folks a chance to win,” she said. “The doors open at noon and bingo begins promptly at 1 p.m. and will go until 4 p.m.”

Frost said turkey bingo players must be at least 18 years of age to play, cards will cost 25 cents per card, per game with as many cards as a player wants, and no limit on how many turkeys any one person can win.

“We’ll be having homemade noodles from scratch for lunch Saturday,” she said, “and there will be snacks and soda, and Schwann’s food products will have their items on hand, and people can win some of their products, and there will be other giveaways as well.”

The Laurels of Hillsboro is the sponsors of the turkeys for the bingo, with co-sponsors being Chambers-Fite Realty, Dr. W. Dalton Thomas of New Market Family Dentistry and Clear Captions services for the hearing impaired.

“I want to also thank Hillsboro Sav-A-Lot for the Honeysuckle white turkeys,” she said. “We’re going to have about 60 turkeys for people to win, so we’re going to be playing some serious bingo Saturday afternoon.”
