Two East Clinton High School students were killed in a one-vehicle accident Saturday night on U.S. Route 62 Southwest, just north of the Fayette/Highland County line.

At around 9:30 p.m., a 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora was heading south on U.S. 62 when the driver, 17-year-old Anderson G. Vannieuwenhze, of Leesburg, lost control going around a left curve, according to Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth. The vehicle went off the right side of the roadway and struck a ditch and utility pole before coming to rest in a field.

Vannieuwenhze and a passenger in his vehicle, 18-year-old Brandon Newman, of Sabina, were both pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Coroner Dr. Dennis Mesker. Both had to be extricated from the vehicle by emergency personnel. Stanforth said the vehicle sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene.

Vannieuwenhze and Newman were both senior students at East Clinton High School in Clinton County.

The Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash, Stanforth said. Also assisting at the scene were members of the Sheriff’s Rescue Unit, Leesburg Police Department, Fayette County EMS, Concord-Green Fire Department, Leesburg Fire & EMS, and the Dayton Power & Light Company.

A portion of U.S. 62 Southwest was closed during the investigation of the crash and re-opened at approximately 12:15 a.m. this morning.
