U.S. Route 50 yard sale hits Hillsboro this weekend

The Highland House Museum and Freedom Farm Market & Organic Grocery are just two of the locations you can visit in Highland County this weekend for a community yard sale that stretches across much of U.S. Route 50, the director of the county visitors bureau said Monday.

While the visitors bureau is not coordinating the event locally this year as it has in the past, Executive Director Destiny Bryson encouraged individuals and businesses along the route to set up their own sales and enjoy heavier visitor traffic.

To those from out of town, Bryson said, “Check it out, travel Route 50 and see what else is here. Then come back and stay with us.”

According to Bryson, there will be an indoor yard sale at the Highland House Museum on East Main Street in Hillsboro, and Freedom Farm Market, a small organic grocery store across from the Highland County District Library on West Main Street, will also participate.

Vicki Knauff, the executive director of the Highland County Historical Society, said the yard sale at Highland House will be a fundraiser for the society.

Knauff told The Times-Gazette that the sale will feature “everything but clothing,” including books, CDs, household items, glassware, ceiling fans, light fixtures, collectibles and dolls.

“We appreciate everybody who has donated items and appreciate anybody coming out Friday and Saturday and seeing what they can use,” Knauff said.

The sale at Highland House will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Knauff added that more information and photos of sale items will be available on the society’s Facebook page.

Freedom Farm Market could not be immediately reached Monday.

Bryson also said 10 homes on Haggarty Road off Route 50 will participate in the community yard sale as well.

According to www.route50.com, the yard sale’s website, the event is now in its 20th year. It will be held Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19.

“While promoted as a yard sale, the actual sales are limited only by the imagination and law,” the website said. “Individual communities and businesses along U.S. 50 are encouraged to have special promotions during this weekend.”
