As Summer Reading nears the halfway point, the Hillsboro Library is preparing for one of its largest events of the year: Library Comic-Con. The Comic-Con is set for Saturday, June 25, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“This is our fifth comic con,” Sarah Davidson, the library’s circulation manager, said.“Each year we try to do something bigger and better. For 2022, we’ve added a Library LEGO Masters competition.”

Davidson said that patrons of all ages will be invited to build a LEGO masterpiece with either a comic book or ocean theme ⁠— fitting in with this year’s Summer Reading slogan: An Ocean of Possibilities.

“We’ll also have our annual costume contest, which is a huge hit with patrons,” Davidson said. “We’ll have prizes for adult, teen, youth and kid contestants. It’s so much fun to see the creativity of everyone in costume.”

Local artist/author William Roller will also be at the library at noon to host a “How to Draw” panel.

“This is another popular activity,” Davidson said, adding that Roller’s drawing often reflect the interests of attendees, ranging from Batman to “The Mandalorian” to “My Hero Academia.”

“My Hero (Academia) is a particularly popular anime right now,” Davidson added. “So we decided to have a special ‘power hour’ dedicated to it.”

During the “My Hero Academia Power Hour,” patrons will be able to take a quiz to determine their quirk (superpower) and can also test their knowledge with MHA trivia.

Additionally, patrons can also test their skills with Nerd Jeopardy, Sci-Fi Family Feud and Superhero Bingo.

“We’ll also have lots of scavenger hunt-style games, including ones based on Aquaman, Doctor Strange and Pokémon,” Davidson said.

“We’ll also have Harry Potter and Spider-Man trivia, as well as crafts,” Davidson added. “We have a full day of fun planned at the library, with something for just about every fan. And, in between activities, patrons can relax in our meeting room and enjoy some snacks. We’ll be serving hot dogs and popcorn.”

Davidson added that the comic con is always a highlight of every Summer Reading program.

“It’s a chance for the community to come together and spend a day celebrating some of our favorite stories and characters,” she said.
