Krusade for KAMP

With less than a month left before KAMP Dovetail opens for the 35th year, director Linda Allen said there’s still money that needs to be raised.

To help meet that goal, the 2nd annual KAMP Dovetail Krusade Dinner will be held June 4 at the Rocky Fork State Park Campground in the Kamp Dovetail Activity Area.

“We still have many children who have asked for sponsorships and we are trying to raise the funds to cover that cost,” said Allen, the executive director of SATH (Supplemental Assistance to the Handicapped), the organization that makes Dovetail possible. “Thank you for any support you can give us.”

KAMP Dovetail is located at Rocky Fork State Park, just outside of Hillsboro. Each year over 300 children with various handicaps attend Dovetail, the only camp of its kind in the area. Staff members and counselors are all volunteers, which allows campers to attend for virtually no cost to their families, according to Allen.

Allen said it costs about $240 for each child that attends Dovetail. And while families are only asked to pay $40 of that total, there are still some that need help.

“When families register their kids we ask for a $40 registration fee and if they don’t have it, we try to help with what we call a sponsorship,” Allen said. “We try to get people to sponsor the 80 or 90 kids we have each year who don’t have the registration fee.”

Overall, Allen said it costs $65,000 to $70,000 to pull the camp off each year. SATH holds numerous fundraisers throughout the year to raise that money.

The KAMP Dovetail Krusade Dinner is the last fundraiser this year.

Cash prizes totaling over $13,000 will be awarded during the evening, including the grand prize of $8,000. The first and every 10th ticket drawn will win $100, the 296th ticket will win $250; the 297th ticket will win $500; the 298th ticket will win $750; the 299th ticket will win $1,000 and the 300th ticket will win $8,000.

Tickets for the dinner are $100 each and only 300 tickets will be sold. Each ticket includes a steak or chicken dinner, provided by Hillsboro Ponderosa. Additional dinners can be purchased for $25. Dinner will be served between 6 and 7:30 p.m., then the drawing will begin. You do not have to be present to win.

Allen said several tickets have already been purchased, but some remain. To purchase one, call Allen at 937-366-6657. Checks should be payable to the KAMP Dovetail Krusade and can be mailed to KAMP Dovetail Krusade, 5350 W. New Market Rd., Hillsboro, Ohio 45133.

“Help support this unforgettable experience,” Allen said.
