Rotary seeks auction items

As Greenfield and its Rotary Club gear up for the 2016 Greene Countrie Towne Festival, the club is also preparing for its largest fundraiser of the year, the annual auction held on the Saturday of each festival.

This year’s festival will begin on July 15 and wrap up on July 17, with the annual auction set for July 16 from 1-3 p.m. at the Fourth Street stage.

Donated items for the auction are currently being accepted. Those items can include art pieces, toys, lawn furniture, bikes, antiques, crafted items, coupons for services from local businesses, and more. Cash can also be donated and will be used to purchase items from local businesses to supplement the auction.

The money raised during the auction each year is channeled back into the community through meaningful endeavors like the Ralph Philips Recreation and Civic Center, the police department and emergency services, city beautification, the various services of the Greenfield Area Christian Center, supporting student clubs and activities, student scholarships, student academic needs, and several other community organizations that serve local residents.

Greenfield Rotary Club President Angela Shepherd encouraged all who can to donate to the auction and come out to the auction on July 16 and place a bid or two. She said there are always nice things to bid on, and a variety of things, too.

A staple of the auction are the limited edition prints sold each year, created by local artist Tammy Wells. This year’s print will feature the Elliott Hotel during its time as a premier hotel in Greenfield.

The once derelict, nearly 130-year-old building has lately been undergoing rejuvenation and will soon see renovation under the ownership of McClain graduate Doug Karnes, who will be offering tours of the building during the festival.

Greenfield Rotarians not only decided to feature the building in the print, but to have Wells create an 11th print, with the proceeds of its sale going toward Karnes’ renovation efforts at the Elliott Hotel.

“It is with the continued support of the community that our club has been able to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars through the auction over the years,” Shepherd said. “And that continued support has ensured that the Greenfield Rotary Club can carry on its service to those in our community.”
