From school supplies to clothing to eye exams, local families should be able to get most of the things their children need this Saturday when Good News Gathering hosts its annual Back To School Free Sale.
The event will be held from 1-3 p.m. at Good News Gathering, 6250 U.S. Route 62, just south of Hillsboro High School/Middle School.
There will be all kinds of school supplies, new and gently used clothing, eye screenings from Dr. Khris Ballard, car seat inspections by the Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District, and the Southern Ohio Pregnancy Center will be on hand with information and to help anyone seeking its assistance.
Everything except the school supplies will be available upon arrival from 1-3 p.m. The process will be different for those wanting backpacks and other supplies.
Starting at 7 a.m., Good News Gathering will pass out tickets for those wanting school supplies or backpacks. The tickets will give customers a 15-minute block, somewhere between 1 and 3 p.m., when they can come back and select the school supplies they need. There will be backpacks, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, folders and much more, all for free.
“Basically, what we’ve done is consulted with the school supply lists from the surrounding schools to get a general idea of what the students need,” said J.D. Lyle, the Good News operations administrator. “In the past what we had was people showing up very early because they wanted to be the first in line. By passing out the tickets at 7 a.m., they’ll get a 15-minute window when they can come back to the ministry center and pick out what they need.”
Lyle said that while several church members and others work on the event, it’s spearheaded by Russ Boone and Ron Hennison.
“It’s an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ in our community,” Lyle said. “We believe Jesus had pretty specific things to say about how his followers should treat those in need. This is our way to help those who might not have as much access to these things as some others.”
