Two local college students have been invited to attend Propel Ohio, hosted by Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).
Propel Ohio is an Ohio Collegiate Leadership Summit to be held Oct. 16 at The Ohio State University Student Union. Jamie Monroe of Clarksville and Rachel Hudson of Hillsboro were chosen to represent Southern State Community College.
Each of Ohio’s two- and four-year public and private colleges and universities were invited to recommend students to attend the event, based on an application process.
Monroe and Hudson are both studying in Southern State’s human & social services academic division.
“Ohio is a beautiful place to live, where people take pride in where they came from,” said Monroe, who volunteers with Operation Rescue and serves as a watchman at the Wilmington House of Prayer.
She plans to use her degree to move her into a career as a “Ohio means everything to me,” said Hudson. “This state is where I was born and raised. I take pride in my community and I only wish to aid its growth. I am fully aware of some of our current issues, as well as others that do not have attention right now. I wish to somehow encourage and promote changes which would resolve, or at least lessen, these issues.”
Alongside her responsibilities as a college student, Hudson also works as both a victim witness advocate and a youth worker.
Propel Ohio is a one-day leadership program that seeks to promote civic engagement and inspire and empower undergraduate students to grow into civic leaders in Ohio. Propel Ohio will actively engage with college students on specific challenges that Ohio is currently facing, including food security, mental health, and human trafficking.
The program will feature Brown, guest speakers, and workshop facilitators who will discuss how college students can tackle these challenges in their Ohio communities. At the end of the program, students will be able to participate in an internship fair, featuring organizations that are tackling food security, mental health, and human trafficking issues in Ohio.
