Board of Elections closed

The Highland County Board of Elections office will be closed Friday, Aug. 28 so that the staff may attend the Fall District Meeting. The office will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31.

Spaghetti dinner fundraiser

The Combat Veteran Motorcycle Association Chapter 12-2, VFW Post 9094, will host at spaghetti dinner fundraiser at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28 at 1000 W. Main St., Hillsboro. The menu will be salad, garlic bread, spaghetti with a choice of sauce with our without meat, and dessert.

Breastfeeding Awareness Walk

The fifth annual Breastfeeding Awareness Walk, sponsored by the Highland County Community Action Inc. WIC program in memory of Jeanne Polstra, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 29 in the center of Hillsboro. There will be giveaways, games and prizes.

Fundraiser in support of Hastings

A fundraiser in support of Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings will be held from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 at the VFW Hall, 1000 W. Main St. (behind the Dairy Queen). There will be hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, dessert and iced tea and water. Freewill donations will be accepted. The event is being hosted by the Highland County Republican Women.

August Open Door free meal cancelled

Due to an unusually busy schedule at the church, it is necessary to cancel the Aug. 29 Open Door free meal at the Greenfield United Methodist Church. It will be back on Saturday, Sept. 26 when the menu will be chicken casserole, green beans, bread and fruit.

Soup’s On free meal

The Soup’s On free meal will be offered Saturday Aug. 29 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, corner of North High and North streets, Hillsboro. Prayer and praise is at 4:30 p.m. Dinner, eat-in only, is served from 5-6 p.m. The menu will be chicken patties served on a bun, vegetable medley, applesauce, assorted drinks, pies, cake and ice cream.

New Hope Baptist Church anniversary

New Hope Baptist Church will celebrate its 161st church anniversary on Sunday, Aug. 30. Guests will be pastor Moorehead and the congregation from the Hosack Street Baptist Church, Columbus. Services start at 4 p.m. Pastor Tyrone Lawes and the congregation welcomes everyone to attend. The church is located at 128 E. Beech St., Hillsboro.

Groundbreaking ceremony

The Fairfield Local Board of Education is inviting the public to a groundbreaking ceremony for its new elementary wing/track and soccer complex at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30.

Middle school selling Indian Cards

The Hillsboro Middle School eighth grade class will be selling Indian Discount Cards through Sept. 25 to help finance the class trip to Washington, D.C. The cards sell for $10 and can be purchased from any eighth grade student or at the HMS office during school hours. For information call (937) 393-9877.

HDH Board of Governors meeting

The Highland District Hospital Board of Governors will hold a special meeting in executive session at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3 at the hospital to discuss strategic planning.

Overeaters Anonymous meetings

Compulsive overeaters are invited to a weekly meeting of Overeaters Anonymous held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 234 N. High St., Hillsboro, on Thursdays at 6 p.m. Overeaters Anonymous is not a diet club. There are no dues, fees or weigh-ins. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop eating compulsively. OA views compulsive overeating as a physical, emotional and spiritual disease that can be arrested, but not cured. For further details contact Mildred at 937-442-1188 or Nancy at 937-217-4020.

Holiday Trails Association meeting

The annual meeting of the Holiday Trails Association will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at the shelter house. The nominees for election this year are David Chilton and Allen Mills, and there is a vacant seat. If you would like to serve on the board call secretary Jo Ann Trueblood at 365-1243.

Old Timers Days 5K Run/Walk

The Christian Missionary Fellowship Church is again hosting the Old Timers Days 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Sept. 19. Registration begins at 7 am. and the event starts at 8 a.m. at the old Malcom Car Lot, 217 Rarden Rd., Peebles. A $20 entry fee includes a T-shirt and runner and walker categories are based on age ranges. CMF helps build churches in other parts of the world with the money raised.

Alzheimer’s/Dementia Lunch & Learn For Families

A free Alzheimer’s/Dementia Lunch & Learn For Families will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 22 and Dec. 15 at The Laurels of Hillsboro. These programs will provide an opportunity for families and caregivers to learn and ask questions about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, while receiving support from others in similar situations.
