Safety Committee meeting postponed

A Hillsboro Street and Safety Committee meeting schedule for Thursday, Oct. 8 to discuss the Festival of the Bells has been postponed and will rescheduled at a later date.

McClain commemorative note cards on sale

Sets including a postcard and four note cards with differing designs, created by artist Tammy Wells and commemorating McClain High School’s centennial, are on sale in the school district’s central office on Fifth Street in Greenfield for $5 per set. Wells’ designs are done in pen and ink and feature McClain High School, art work from within the high school, the McClain residence, and an advertisement of the horse collar manufactured by Edward McClain’s company.

AAUW, Altrusa collecting books

The AAUW and Altrusa are collecting books for the annual book sale. Barrels have been placed in the following locations: Hillsboro – Public library, Kroger, Community Market, YMCA; Greenfield – Public library; Leesburg – Public library; Lynchburg – Public library. Proceeds from the sale will be used for scholarships for women who are returning to school and for literacy projects in the community. The sale will be held Nov. 5 from 12-6 p.m., Nov. 6 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Nov. 7 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Highland County Administration Building in Hillsboro.

Octoberfest/Carnival

The Brushcreek Community Center will hold its Octoberfest/Carnival on Saturday, Oct. 10 in the Sinking Spring Gym. Serving starts at 5 p.m. and the menu includes chicken and noodles, chili, coney dogs, barbeque, homemade desserts, pop, coffee and water. A cake auction will be held at 6:30 p.m. with a masquerade immediately following. Freewill donations help support the community center. Everyone is welcome. There will be game booths and other items of interest.

Lynchburg Fall Car Show

The annual Lynchburg Fall Car Show will be held Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Lynchburg Lions Club Park on Sharpsville Road. The show is sponsored by the Lynchburg Lions Club and the Martinsville IOOF Lodge. Registration will be from 9 a.m. until noon. The Top Twenty Awards will be presented at 3 p.m. Contact Eddie Smart at 937-485-4825 or Roger Pence at 937-302-0937 for more information. The first 50 cars receive dash plaques. Food will be served throughout the day by the Lynchburg Lions Club.

The Southern Ohio Antique Tractor Pullers’ Association will have an official pull at the Lions Club Park Track the same day. Registration for the tractors will begin at 11 a.m. and the pull will begin at noon. Both of these events are free and open to the public.

Guns and More Guns event

The National Wild Turkey Federation South Central Chapter will hold its inaugural Guns and More Guns event Saturday, Oct. 10 at AmVets Post 61 on North Shore Drive. The doors open at 5 p.m. Admission is $15 at the door. For more information contact Randy Dyer at 937-588-1059.

The 33rd annual Kelch Reunion will be held Sunday, Oct. 11 at the American Legion Hall on College Street in Sardinia. Lunch will begin at 1 p.m.

Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District meeting

The Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District will meet in regular session at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct 13 at 640 N. Washington St., Greenfield.

Property Maintenance and Restoration Committee meeting

The city of Hillsboro Property Maintenance and Restoration Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 in the Hillsboro Municipal Court at 130 Homestead Drive to discuss amendments to the city sign ordinance. The meeting is open to the public.

Zoning and annexation Committee meeting

The Hillsboro Zoning and Annexation Committee will hold a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 in the Municipal Court at 130 Homestead Drive to hear comments and answer questions regarding the annexation of unincorporated properties surrounded by incorporated properties, referred to as “unincorporated islands.” within the City of Hillsboro, Ohio. The hearing is open to the public.

Highland SWCD meeting

The Highland Soil & Water Conservation District’s 73rd Annual Meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Hi-Tec Center,1575 N. High St., Hillsboro. The Highland SWCD will be hosting a social gathering with light refreshments being served. Program highlights include the supervisor election from 5:30–6:30 p.m. and the presentation of awards scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

One supervisor will be elected to serve a three-year term. Larry Shannon and Steve Vance are the candidates. You may vote on the evening of the meeting or by requesting an absentee ballot in writing no later than three days prior to the election. Requests should be mailed to the Highland SWCD office, 514 Harry Sauner Rd., Ste. 2, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133. Reservations are not required to attend the meeting.

Fall Fun-Fest

The Marshall School Committee will host the 7th annual Fall Fun-Fest at the Marshall School gymnasium from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Carnival games, grocery Bingo, cake walks and a 50/50 raffle will be available. Admission is free for all ages. A costume contest will begin at 6 p.m. Game tickets are 25 cents each or 5/$1. Chicken and noodles, macaroni and cheese, sloppy joes, coneys, coleslaw, baked beans, chips, homemade pies and drinks will be available for a freewill donation. Humane Society annual meeting

The Highland County Humane Society will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21 in the large basement meeting room in the Highland County Administration Building in Hillsboro. The meeting is open to anyone interested in supporting the Humane Society as it plans upcoming and 2016 events.

Vascular screening event

The Highland County Health Department will host a vascular screening event for patients 50 years of age or older. Screenings will be performed by Christ Hospital. The non-invasive, painless screenings are effective in detecting three prevalent vascular diseases; carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and abdominal aortic aneurysms. The event will be held Oct. 20, 22, 27 and 29 at the Highland County Health Department, 1487 N. High St., Hillsboro. The cost of the screening is $60. An appointment is required and may be obtained by calling the health department at 937-393-1941.

HealthQuest of Highland County is holding a special event on Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. to help bring awareness and strategies around eating well. Halloween canvas art event

On Sunday, Oct. 25 Spark is going to hold its first Halloween canvas art event for children in grades 1-8. at the gallery/studio at 251 Jefferson St., Greenfield, from 2-4 p.m. Wear your favorite Halloween costume and join in the fun while you paint a stretched canvas of a black cat staring at the full moon. The $25 admission fee includes a canvas, acrylic paint, use of parks painting equipment, and professional instruction and assistance. There will be an award for the most creative Halloween costume.
