Help for the holidays

A hurdle to providing assistance to families is that they oftentimes miss the deadline to apply for the help, according to the the Highland County Prosecutor’s Office, which wants to make sure everyone is aware of some local holiday programs and their deadlines.

For those who keep track of countdowns, there are only six weekends left before Christmas is upon us. Local organizations are gearing up for the busy holiday season, checking their lists and checking them twice to assist as many families this holiday season as possible. Local organizations coordinate services to ensure every family in need that requests assistance is able to receive it. A lot of behind the scenes planning takes place before the shopping and wrapping can commence.

Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins, who also organizes For Highland County Kids, wants to reach out and remind families of approaching deadlines to request assistance this Christmas season. For Highland County Kids is a non-profit organization that primarily assists with purchasing gifts and holiday meals for local families that are on waiting lists for other organizations.

Contact information for other local organizations providing assistance is as follows:

  • Highland County Community Action — Contact Angie Mustard by phone at 937-393-3458, application deadline is Friday, Nov. 13;
  • Samaritan Outreach, Toys for Tots — Applications can be made on Dec. 7, 8, and 9 only, call 937-393-2220;
  • Hope Emergency — call 937-364-1055 for information or go to hopeemergency.org.

For those interested, contact the organizations for information on how to give to these programs that assist families in need during the holidays.
