WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the White House released a fiscal year 2017 budget proposal that includes two free years of community college, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) met with Ohio members of the Association of Community College Trustees – a group composed of community college presidents and members of their administrations. The group discussed the crucial role that community colleges play in workforce development and the importance of making higher education more accessible.

Brown is a co-sponsor of the America’s College Promise Act – legislation that would make two years of community college free, providing a pathway to a four-year degree.

“Ohio’s community colleges continue to provide our students with a quality, first-class education,” said Brown. “Making community college free will help ensure that all Ohioans have the opportunity for success.”

South State Community College President Dr. Kevin Boys was among the attends that also included representatives from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Clark State Community College, Cuyahoga Community College, Edison State Community College, Lakeland Community College, Marion Technical College, Northwest State Community College, Rhodes State College and Sinclair Community College.

Brown continues to work to foster collaboration among Ohio universities and colleges. On April 27, Ohio college and university presidents will convene in Washington, D.C. for Brown’s ninth annual Ohio College Presidents Conference. Brown’s forum – the first of its kind for college presidents in Ohio – brings together leaders from two-year, four-year, private, public, and community colleges to discuss shared challenges and goals for students and institutions of higher learning.
