The Hillsboro Cub Scout Pack 37 held its annual Pinewood Derby recently at the Hillsboro United Methodist Church.
To prepare for race day, scouts and their adult partners made a race car out of a 7-inch block of wood. They designed it, sanded it, painted it and added wheels to it. The designs are wide ranging from sleek and modern, to army tanks to a car that looked like a slice of pizza. The races are so close that sometimes the difference between first and second place is within one-thousandth of a second.
A total of 81 cars were entered in the race. The top three winners in each class were as follows: Tiger Den: 1st place Xavier Lowe, 2nd place Jacob Hensley, 3rd place Collin Swackhamer. Wolf Den: 1st place Liam Tener, 2nd place Cody Richards, 3rd place Keegan Eyre, Bear Den: 1st place Logan Zurface, 2nd place Austin Richards, 3rd place Landen Eyre. Webelos 1 Den: 1st place Hunter Henderson, 2nd place Chris Crouch, 3rd place Casey West. Webelos 2 Den: 1st place Alex Wilkin, 2nd place Cole Michael, 3rd place Christian Raisch.
Overall Pack winners for first, second and third were Alex Wilkin, Logan Zurface and Liam Tener.
Scouts and family members of scouts could enter an open class “outlaw” race. The three with the fastest cars were Alex Wilkin, Jim Fields and Chris Zurface.
There were many creative car designs and scouts voted for their favorites. Engraved display stands for their winning derby cars were awarded for “Best Appearance” to Devon Steward, Elijah Dabbs, Logan Zurface, Casey West, Max Trimble and Emma Trimble.
The Hillsboro Cub Scouts would like to thank all those who helped to make this event possible including the Hillsboro United Methodist Church, Bear Mechanical, Tener Trash Removal, Chuck Wait Tire, The Old Y Restaurant, Little’s Farm Supply and Red Dot Trophies.
