Lynchburg-Clay beats McClain

A Saturday afternoon matchup between the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs and the Greenfield Lady Tigers played itself out on the hardwood at LCHS in front a good crowd for both schools. Lynchburg, coming off a stinging loss Thursday night to Eastern, was hungry for a win. Their run-and-shoot offense did not disappoint the home crowd, as they easily beat the Lady Tigers 62-42, improving their overall record to 16-4.

McClain had the first quarter figured out. They had to slow the game down and run a ball control offense if they wanted to beat the running Mustang team, and that is what they did. McClain controlled the tip and ran a patient and controlled offense, keeping the ball out of the hands of Lynchburg. It paid off, as at the end of the first quarter Greenfield led by a score of 12-9.

The second quarter was nothing like the first. The Lady Mustangs came out of the gate, scoring 8 quick points, and keeping the Tigers on their heels. Lynchburg’s Peyton Scott, who hit a big 3-pointer in the first quarter, was on fire in the second, scoring 9 points from the floor and adding 4 of 4 from the freethrow line for 13 of her 22 points. Her teammate, McKayla Binkley also contributed in the second period with 6 points. She was very consistent in the ballgame, recording 18 points in the game and scoring in every quarter. McClain could not keep up with the fast pace, and was outscored by 10 points in the second.

Halftime saw the Mustangs leading the Tigers, 30-23.

The Lady Mustangs took the third quarter throw-in and promptly went down and scored. Not intimidated, though, were the Tigers, as they quickly inbounded the ball and drove down for a quick bucket of their own. But, despite Greenfield hitting three field goals and two treys, and playing some very gritty defense in the period, Lynchburg was unstoppable with five girls scoring in the quarter, outscoring their opponents 16-13.

As the game entered the final quarter, the pace of the game picked up and the Tigers could not keep up. Lynchburg went on a scoring run of 12 to 2 and never looked back. In all, the Mustangs would score 16 in the final quarter, while the Lady Tigers settled for only 6 points.

Greenfield, now 10-11 overall, will have a few days off, then travel to Miami Trace on Wednesday, Feb. 1, for an SCOL matchup.
