The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs snatched the lead from the Oak Hill Lady Oaks in the first quarter of their district semifinal, and kept it for the rest of the game – running away with a 23-point win and a slot in the Division III District Championship.

The Lynchburg ladies scored 7 out of 9 from the freethrow line for 78 percent. Peyton Scott led the Mustangs with 22 points.

Things were neck and neck in the first several minutes of the game before Scott took a 1-point lead at 4:17 with one from the freethrow line. After that, Lynchburg went on a scoring run that left Oak Hill in the dust – and when it cleared, the scoreboard showed Lynchburg had kept their opponents at 4 points for the quarter while making 25 for themselves.

Lynchburg improved their lead to 23 points in the second quarter. Oak Hill put up a fight with 18 points, but it was already too late to bring it back around. At the half, the score was 63-35.

The Lady Mustangs kept Oak Hill at 13 points for the third quarter while making 18 for themselves between Zoe Fittro, Scott, and Hannah and McKayla Binkley. Lynchburg led by as many as 32 points in the period, finishing things out ahead by 28 at 63-35.

Although Oak Hill outscored Lynchburg by 5 points in the final period, they couldn’t wittle the Mustangs’ lead down to less than 18 points.

The game ended with Lynchburg ahead by 23 at 75-52, granting them a slot in the district semifinal.

“We haven’t played in nine days – that’s a long time to go,” said LCHS girls coach Whitney Lewis. “I think we were just excited to come out and actually play a real-life basketball game. I think that was part of it, and I think we did a great job in that first quarter.”

The Lady Mustangs will take on Fairland High School in the district final Saturday, March 4 at Waverly High School. The game will begin at noon.
