The cross country season got underway Wednesday in Highland County as the McClain Tigers hosted the McClain Invitational at Mitchell’s Park in Greenfield. The event featured four schools from Highland County as McClain, Hillsboro, Fairfield, and Whiteoak all participated.

The event got underway with an elementary half mile race that pitted the fastest young runners in the area against one another.

The varsity girls were the first high school age athletes to take to the course. The course at Mitchell’s Park wraps around the baseball and softball diamonds before finally finishing at the soccer field. Ciara Colwell of Fairfield finished second overall behind a runner from Washington Courthouse. The other athletes from the Highland County school put in a very good effort at the event and did the local community proud.

The varsity boys wrapped up the event with an excellent race that saw Noah Richmond, Matthew Mangus, and the majority of the Fairfield team take an early lead.

The pack didn’t thin out much as the race progressed with runners from all of the participating schools putting on a good show for the crowd of supporters that attended.

In the end the Fairfield combo of Mangus and Richmond outclassed the field and led the Lions to an excellent showing in the event.

The overall boys results from the event saw the Fairfield Lions in first, Miami Trace second, Hillsboro third, Whiteoak fourth, Washington fifth, and McClian in sixth.

The overall girls results were Fairfield in first, Washington second, Hillsboro third, Miami Trace fourth, and Whiteoak fifth.
