Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs boys soccer advanced to the district tournament on Saturday by virtue of an 8-1 win over the Eastern Warriors on Wednesday in the sectional final game at Lynchburg-Clay High School.

Senior Kyle Luneke and junior Chris Young led the way for the Mustangs in the win.

Luneke scored five goals on the night to continue the great season he has had for Lynchburg in 2017.

Young was responsible for two goals and also tallied three assists on the night.

The Mustangs came out ready to play as Luneke netted his first goal of the night on Young’s first assist of the night at the 34:01 mark of the first half.

Lynchburg added to their lead less than three minutes later when Luneke took a pass from fellow senior Austin Hilt and sent it roaring past the Warriors keeper.

Young got in on the act a short time later as he dribbled through the heart of the defense and rocketed the third goal of the night into the net for Lynchburg.

Luneke added to his goal total, and earned a hat trick, at the 10:05 mark of the first half to give the Mustangs a 4-0 lead that they would hold until half time.

Lynchburg kept the pressure on in the second half as Luneke added his fourth goal of the night at the 36:15 mark of the second half to push the Mustang lead to 5-0.

Young added his second goal of the night less than 30 seconds later to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead and end any thought of a Warriors comeback.

The Mustangs secured their last goal of the night off of the foot of Luneke with 30 minutes still to play in the game.

The Warriors registered their goal at the 13:44 mark of the second half to provide the 8-1 final score.

Mustangs head coach Dennis West said, “Once the boys got their minds focused, they played well. They have been playing well most of the season. Our passing is excellent and we got good play from a lot of them tonight.”

The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Waverly to participate in the district tournament semi-finals.
