Hillsboro High School girls varsity basketball preview

The Hillsboro High School Lady Indians varsity basketball team will open their season on Monday, November 27 when they host the Fayetteville Lady Rockets.

The Lady Indians are coached by R.J. Moberly and feature a roster with seven girls returning, including four seniors, to the varsity level and eight new faces.

“We have seven kids back from last year’s squad, so we have some experience to build on. We have a nice infusion of young athletic players to throw in the mix. So, early on it has been a challenge for us to figure out how to blend old and new. But, that is what the preseason is for and I think we are making some strides in that area,” said Moberly.

The Lady Indians coach believes that the players on this team have the potential to be special, “With the group that we have this year I think, everybody brings something special to the team. Nobody is going to be the complete package, so we are going to have to rely on the bonding and teamwork aspect of the game. We are going to have to build that chemistry and play together. I believe everyone has something to contribute and when we are all on the same page I think we have a chance to be a lot more competitive than we have been in the past.”

Moberly wants to see his team compete night in and night out, “We haven’t put together many wins the last couple of years. I think we have the talent to find a few more of those and I think we have the talent to be more competitive in the games that are going to be tough for us to win. Our goal is to try to hang and keep it close. We want to give ourselves the opportunity to be in something meaningful in the fourth quarter and see how it plays out.”

The Lady Indians’ focus will be on the defensive end of the floor this season, “We are going to have to be a great defensive team. We play several great offensive teams and players this season. Our main focus is going to be to try to take teams out of what they want to do. Hopefully, we will be able to generate some offense out of our defense.”
