Wildcats win in OT

MCDERMOTT – The Whiteoak Wildcats(9-14) pull off an overtime victory over the Paint Valley Bearcats at Northwest High School in Division IV District Sectional Semifinals, 65-59.

The Wildcats trailed for the first half of the matchup and came back after halftime to tie up the ballgame after being down by five leaving the first quarter and being down by two at the end of the second quarter.

Nick Bailey led with 18 points, Carson Emery had 15 points for the night, Landon Barnett scored 14 points in the winning effort, and Bradley Ashbaugh made 12 points in the Whiteoak victory.

Bryce Newland had a huge night leading Paint Valley with 22 points with help from Cordell Grubb with 15 points and Cruz McFadden scored 10 point for the Bearcats.

“Hats off to Paint Valley, they played extremely hard and are a very good team.”

In the first quarter Josh Hughes, Bailey, Barnett each scored two points, and Carson Emery scored four points though they trailed, 15-10.

For the second quarter, the Wildcats outscored Paint Valley 19-15, Bailey and Emery scored six point that quarter, Bradley Ashbaugh put himself in the scoring column with five for the quarter, Whiteoak was down 30-29.

Whiteoak began to slow down Paint Valley on offense and took over the game as Bryce Newland was the only Bearcat that was able to score in the third quarter, Wildcats took a 42-40 lead.

Grubb and Newland were a major issue for Whiteoak in the fourth quarter to tie up the game and take it into overtime.

The Wildcats held the Paint Valley team just one point in overtime to earn the victory with free throws.

“Our kids battled all game and finally won the game at free throw line.” stated Coach Ryan Barnett

Whiteoak will play again on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Northwest High School against Glenwood New Boston.
