Lions looking to have strong 2015

Coach Wayne Bowman is heading into his third year of coaching the Fairfield Lions golf team and has already seen improvements in a team that finished fifth in both the league and the sectionals a year before.

The team has nine golfers on the squad this season and brings back three seniors in Zack Schuler, Brad Bumgarner and Cayden Tolle. Schuler, in 2014, made the All-League team and was named second team All-District.

“Zack has been our number one player the last three years and should be there again this year,” coach Bowman said of his returning top man. “Brad [Bumgarner] has been coming on this year to challenge him for the top spot.”

Bumgarner was also named to the All-League team and made All-District Honorable Mention.

Coach Bowman is hoping that his team can break into the top three in the league this year and have his team make it out of the Sectional tournament or at least have one more individuals make it out.

Coach Bowman also says that he can already tell, with the younger guys on the team, that the future of the program is looking bright as well.

“We do have 3 freshmen this year and 2 are in the top 6 already, so the future is looking good for the team,” Bowman said. “We have, as a team, improved this year already and looking for a strong finish on the season. I want to thank the parents for their support this year and commitment to getting the guys to play more golf this year on their own to improve.”
