Mustangs pick up two over weekend

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs picked up two wins over the Friday Saturday basketball schedule as they traveled to Manchester Friday evening and came away with a victory, 78-48.

After a slow start by both teams offensively which saw the host Greyhounds leading the visitors, 6-5, Lynchburg-Clay grabbed control of the lead and finished the first quarter up 24 to 6.

In the second quarter, the Mustangs scored even with their hosts, 14 points a piece, to send the contest to 38-20 at the half.

After a couple quick baskets by the Greyhounds to start the third, the Mustangs extended their lead by netting 24 points in the quarter to take a 62-32 lead after three.

In the fourth, each team scored 16 points to send the final score to 78-48. Devin Pierson led the Mustangs and all scorers with 24 points on the evening, followed by Joe Giordano with 20. Christian Inman followed with nine points, and River Mullins and Josh Ahrmann each chipped in seven. Eric McLaughlin added six points, while Zach Blankenship and AJ Stroop rounded out the scoring with three and two points, respectively.

Unofficially, Zach Blankenship led the Mustangs with seven assists on the evening, and Josh Ahrmann led with seven rebounds. The Mustangs totaled over twenty assists in the game.

On Saturday evening the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs traveled to Waverly to take on the Tigers. The first stanza saw the Mustangs and host Tigers play to a stalemate, as each team traded baskets and made stops to knot the score up at 12-12 at the end of one.

In the second quarter, it was the Mustangs who gained the upper hand, taking the quarter by a score of 22 to 14 to push the advantage to 34-26 at the half.

A run by the Tigers in the beginning of the third gave them the lead by three, but the Mustangs were able to make one of their own at the end of the third and hold on by a margin of 48 to 44 after three quarters of play.

In the fourth and final quarter, the Mustangs outscored the Tigers 17 to 8 while limiting them to three field goals. In that final quarter, the Mustangs went seven for ten from the charity stripe.

Devin Pierson and Joe Giordano led the Mustangs and all scorers on the evening with 19 points each. Eric McLaughlin followed with 12 points. Josh Ahrmann chipped in six points on the evening, followed by Zach Blankenship and Morgan Ryan with three each. Brandon Storer netted two points, while Christian Inman rounded out the scoring with one. Unofficially, Devin Pierson led the Mustangs with seven assists Joe Giordano led the Mustangs with five rebounds. Josh Ahrmann also had three steals on the evening.

With the wins, LC improves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. They will be back in action Tuesday evening as they host the West Union Dragons in conference play. JV tip time will be 6:00 for the game.
