Turnovers hurt HHS in loss to Wilmington

Led by Cameron Stewart’s triple double, the Wilmington High School boys basketball team hit a season-high point total in a 116-28 blowout of Hillsboro in South Central Ohio League action at Fred Summers Court.

Wilmington scored the first 35 points of the game and improved to 15-1 overall and 11-0 in the SCOL. Hillsboro falls to 6-11 overall and 3-8 in the league.

Stewart had a triple-double with 28 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

Stewart was 11 of 13 from the field, including six of eight beyond the three-point arc. His 28-point effort included a 16 point first quarter, as Wilmington snared a 37-3 lead.

Also scoring 28 for the ‘Cane was Jarron Cumberland, on the strength of 12 for 19 shooting from the floor, including a trio of three-pointers. Cumberland also had seven assists.

In all, WHS had seven players score in double figures. Dylan Beaugard had 15 points and five assists, while Chris Wolary added 10 points. Off the bench, Jeffrey Mansfield scored 10 points, while Nick Morris and Matt Smith had 12 and 11 points each, respectively.

Wilmington committed just four turnovers, three coming in the first half.

For Hillsboro, the Indians were plagued by turnovers, committing 35 for the game-including 25 in the first half. Wilmington reaped the benefits of those Hillsboro miscues, scoring 35 points off Hillsboro’s turnovers in the first half, and accounted for 54 points off turnovers for the entire game.

In a losing cause, Hillsboro was led by Phillip Mycroft with eight points and non-starter Cameron Reed added five points for the Indians.
