Mix of experience and new faces for LC

There are many new faces in the lineup for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs softball team for the 2016 season, but the team is also led by some strong seniors and juniors.

Heather Brown returns in her second year as head coach for the softball team and is looking forward to the new season.

“We finished the year last season at just below .500 at 10-11 and lost in the first round of sectionals.” said Coach Brown. “I think this year we have learned from the mistakes we made as a team both as players and as a coach and can use that going forward into the season.

“The team is progressing really well this season. We have strong returning seniors and juniors who lead the team with their academic and athletic knowledge. We have a group of sophomores that saw varsity level plays last year and some new sophomores and freshman who have played this game competitively and who will contribute to our team’s success.

The team lost three seniors last year in Madysyn Creighton, Brittany Allen and McKenzie Reynolds. This year they will have two in Madison Wills and Chelsi Hacker.

“Madison is a first baseman and will be a strong hitter in our lineup this season,” said Brown when asked about her seniors. “Chelsi will be a utility player and will also be another strong hitter in our lineup.”

“I have many new faces in a majority of the fielding positions which I am very excited about. The DP/Flex option is a great strategy and we will be utilizing it this year.

“Our pitching and hitting have come a long way since last year. Lauren Meddock, Tylar Griffith and Kaitlyn Waits are all new pitchers for us this season and should be able to help the team a good bit.

I think we will be able to play competitively this year in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference. I think we have the ability to be a challenge for some of the teams we will be going up against.”
