The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs volleyball team honored Abby Blankenship, Makayla Creed, Hannah Morgan and Tylar Griffith 0n Thursday as part of their senior and parents night. The Lady Mustangs had their celebration spoiled by the visiting Lady Green Devils of North Adams as they fell in straight sets to the visitors 25-12, 25-8 and 25-12.
The North Adams ladies celebrated for the second night in a row in Highland County following Wednesday’s epic five set victory against the McClain Lady Tigers who were also celebrating senior night.
In the first set the Lady Mustangs tried to keep it close and were within three points at 9-12 halfway through the set but ultimately were unable to overcome the relentless nature of the North Adams attack. The Lady Green Devils put the set away on a run of six straight points, including two service aces, to emerge with a 1-0 match lead.
North Adams came out on fire in the second set as they built a 16-1 lead early and cruised to an easy set win to claim a controlling 2-0 match lead.
The third set was more of the same from both teams as the Lady Mustangs scrambled to keep up with the attacking Lady Green Devils. Lynchburg had the set tied early at 3-3 but were unable to keep up the pace as the visitors quickly extended the lead to 10-4 and eventually 18-8. From that point the Lady Mustangs attempted to make a comeback but were only able to muster four more points before succumbing to North Adams and losing the match 3-0.
Lynchburg head coach Mark Faust after the game said, “North Adams is a really good team. There is nothing wrong with losing to North Adams. I felt like tonight they just beat us. We didn’t lose to them, they were just better than us.”
“We went down there last Tuesday and took them to four set and had a pretty good chance of winning the match. I told the girls that they knew they had to come out and play their best tonight to get the win,” said Faust.
Faust was full of praise for his four seniors as he said, “The four of them have logged a lot of sets for us over the years. I think it is important to understand that before they came we went winless and won three games. The last two years we have won our division in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference. They have done a tremendous job with helping us turn this program around. It’s immeasurable what those four have done for this program during their four years.”
Lynchburg-Clay will be in action again on Tuesday when they host the Fairfield Lady Lions in the opening round of the D III southeast district volleyball tournament.
