The Highland County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution Wednesday adopting a written directive ordering that no future changes to the county’s email servers be made unless prior written notice has been given to the Highland County Common Pleas Court and clerk of courts.
Commissioner Jeff Duncan said the decision was made after judge Rocky Coss was unable to access his email while he was away.
According to Duncan, a county IT consultant said server changes were required to keep county emails secure, and the transition could be made overnight without affecting operations the following day.
However, Duncan said, the switch took longer than expected, causing hangups in the county’s email service that prevented Coss accessing his email properly while away.
“We were under the impression this would be overnight and no one would notice,” Duncan said. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t as smooth a transition as we hoped.”
Duncan said there was no data loss in the incident, but Coss asked an order be put into writing to prevent the same from happening again.
In other business Wednesday, the commissioners passed a motion to continue the county’s dental insurance service with Superior Dental.
Duncan said the county was in communication with several other insurance agencies about changing coverage, but none were as competitive as Superior Dental.
The commissioners also renewed several routine contracts and passed financial resolutions.
Board president Shane Wilkin was absent.
