Robert S. Cunningham, 91, Leesburg, died Thursday morning Nov. 24, 2016.

He was born Oct. 9, 1925 in Hillsboro the son of the late Walter “Butch” and Hazel Cunningham.

Robert “Bob” served in the US. Navy from 1943-1946 during World War II as a Petty Officer Second Class. After his honorable discharge from the Navy he married Eleanor Terry of Leesburg. They were married 63 years. He worked for the Bassett furniture company and then went on to work for the Berkline Furniture company retiring after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Leesburg United Methodist Church, had received an award for 16 years of distinguished service to the Fairfield Local School system and the Fairfield School District, he was an active member of the Southern Hills Community Bank Board of Directors, the Leesburg Masonic Lodge #78 F&AM, a 69-year member of the Leesburg American Legion serving on the Leesburg Veterans Committee and was affectionately known as “Mr. Leesburg.”

He is survived by three children, Scott Cunningham of Chillicothe, Lisa Cunningham of Stockton, California, Bruce (Twilene) Cunningham of New Vienna; seven grandchildren, Chris (Tonia Dye) Vorhies, Bruce Michael (Keli) Cunningham, Dustin Cunningham, Megan Guyett, Kecia (Aaron) Cropper, Tyler Potter, Wyatt Potter; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Terry Cunningham on Sept. 25, 2011; one daughter, Regina “Reggie” Cunningham; one granddaughter, Samantha Whittenburg; and one brother John “Jack” Cunningham.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29 at the Leesburg United Methodist Church. Pastors Rich Allen and John Fitzgerald will officiate. Burial, with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard, will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Leesburg. Masonic services will be conducted prior to the burial at the cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 5- 8 p.m. at the church.
