‘Tis the season

With Thanksgiving just a couple days away, City of Hillsboro employees started preparing for the holiday season Monday by installing Christmas wreaths on light poles in the uptown area.

The wreaths are provided by the Hillsboro Uptown Business Association (HUBA), which also recently purchased bows that have been placed on the new benches in the uptown area, and are installed by the city. The wreaths stretch one-half block in each direction from the center of the city.

There are several upcoming events associated with the holiday season including the following:

Dec. 1 – HUBA First Friday: An Uptown Christmas – The event runs from 5-8 p.m. in the uptown Hillsboro area. There will be horse-drawn wagon rides and Christmas sing-a-longs loading and unloading from behind the Highland County Courthouse. There will also be a Santa’s Workshop for children where they will be able to write letters to Santa and make reindeer food. There will be a gingerbread house contest with both adult and children’s age groups. The Hillsboro United Methodist Church Bell Choir will perform and several uptown shops will be open late for Christmas shopping and holiday treats.

Dec. 2 – 36th annual Greenfield Eagles Christmas Parade – The parade starts at 6 p.m. with lineup starting at 4:30 p.m. in the Greenfield Research parking lot. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on the last float in the parade and they will stop at the firehouse on Washington Street where kids will be able to visit with them and be treated to hot chocolate, cookies and candy. Parade announcers will set up near the intersection of Jefferson and Washington streets.

Dec. 9 – Ugly Christmas Sweater Charity 5K Run/Walk – It will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the uptown Hillsboro area and is sponsored by HUBA.

Dec. 9 – Hillsboro Lighted Christmas Parade – It starts at 6 p.m. and is expected to arrive in the uptown Hillsboro area around 6:20 p.m. It is sponsored by HUBA. Driving units should stage at the Highland County Fairgrounds, where the gates will open at 11 a.m. Walking and marching units should be at the lower parking lot on the old high school campus by 5 p.m.

In the event of severe weather or rain, the parade will be postponed until Saturday, Dec. 16.
