Sex crimes prominent in Highland County Grand Jury indictments

Several men were charged Tuesday with sex crimes in November’s Highland County Grand Jury indictments, including one case involving alleged prostitution.

Johnny Lee Groves, 34, Hillsboro, was indicted on two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of compelling prostitution, all third-degree felonies.

According to court documents, Groves allegedly paid a 14-year-old juvenile to allow Groves to perform sex acts on the juvenile last year.

The juvenile said the acts took place in the summer of 2017 on East Lilly Avenue in Hillsboro, the affidavit says.

The affidavit further says that Groves admitted in law enforcement interviews in September that the acts took place on more than one occasion.

Also Tuesday, Steven J. Holland, 36, Hillsboro, a Hillsboro City Schools teacher when charges related to the incident were originally filed, was indicted on one count of sexual battery, a third-degree felony, and two counts of sexual imposition, a third-degree misdemeanor.

Holland allegedly touched a female inappropriately at his home in Brushcreek Township in the summer of 2008, according to court documents.

Court documents state the activity continued until a more inappropriate form of touching in September of 2010 when the victim was 17, according to the affidavit.

An affidavit filed in the case states that when Holland was interviewed during the investigation, he did not deny the 2010 event, but stated that he could paint the incident in a different light.

The affidavit says that Holland said the victim did not have a problem with any of the inappropriate touching at the time it occurred, and that he knew what he did was illegal, but there was not anything he could do about it now.

Hillsboro Superintendent Tim Davis said Holland had been put on paid administrative leave until further notice when charges were originally filed.
