For the last several years on a day in May, McClain students have gone out into the village and served their community, and each year the town shines a bit brighter for their efforts. It’s known as MHS Day, and this year’s event is set for Friday, May 13.
As with previous years, students’ tasks for the day will include trash pick-up around town, mulching, painting, cleaning at the cemetery, clean-up and painting at the parks, planting flowers, and clean-up in nature areas in and around Greenfield.
The whole high school is involved in the day of community service, and most of the teachers and staff not only provide the supervision, but join in, too.
McClain Principal Matt Shelton said everyone is always excited for the annual MHS Day. “Watching everyone come together every year for efforts centered around making our community even better is a great feeling.”
In previous years the tasks for the day have been decided on by an MHS Day committee consisting of teachers. Last year, the event organization was done a bit differently as the committee was chaired by a student. This year, the McClain FFA is handling all the details.
Kenedi Wise, who is heading up the planning, said the FFA is grateful to be able to help. She also said the group especially appreciates Hayley Lovett’s class because they drive around and make sure everyone gets popsicles to refresh them a bit from the hard work.
On the day of the event, students and staff will get started around 8 a.m. then head back to the school for lunch. Following that, the student council will host a seniors versus faculty basketball game, which the student body will get to watch.
Also that day, and held specifically during MHS Day, is a hiring event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the courthouse lawn. It’s hosted by the village of Greenfield and is playing off last year’s successful event. The purpose of holding it during MHS Day is to invite the high school students out and about that morning to see what careers are available to them in Greenfield.
Should there be inclement weather on May 13, MHS Day will be moved to May 16.
“I like to think of this as a Greenfield beautification day,” Shelton said previously. “This community gives so much to the school that a day like this is the least our high school can do to give back.”
