There’s a new shop open for business in Posey Plaza in downtown Greenfield and it was welcomed by the village Wednesday during the shop’s grand opening.
Shannon’s Crafting Creations is what owner Shannon Slaton describes as a family business. Slaton and her mother, Johanna Kirwin, make handmade creations for the shop, but in addition to that Slaton’s son, Cameron Smith, helps with social media; 12-year-old granddaughter Madison Lucas is learning how to make wreaths so she will be able to add her own items to the shop; Slaton’s sister-in-law makes T-shirts and other items that will eventually be added to the shop; and Slaton’s husband, Bobby Slaton, has also helped with the logistics of getting it all put together by building shelves and hanging hooks.
Slaton said she and her mother have lived apart from each other in different states for more than three decades. After her mother’s husband passed away three years ago, Kirwin moved in with Slaton in Ohio and the two “started making and creating crafts together,” Slaton said. The opportunity to make it an actual business came when Slaton lost her job a couple years ago. Now they are doing what they love and taking their business to a brick-and-mortar shop in downtown Greenfield.
Slaton said she and her mother make their own items, which includes things like wreaths and thrifted items transformed into new things. Currently, the shop is open Wednesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those hours will be adjusted for special events.
For Main Street Greenfield’s Valentine’s Day Shop Hop event on Feb. 11, the shop will have a drawing for any item in the store. Tickets, which are $1 each or six for $5, for the drawing can be purchased at the store until the end of Saturday’s shop hop event. A winner will be picked that evening.
“Owning my own family business making wreaths and other crafts has been a dream of mine for many years,” Slaton said. “I’m so excited that this opportunity has finally arrived.”
