Brown County inmate found dead in cell

An inmate was found hanging in his cell on Thursday evening, July 23, at the Brown County Adult Detention Center, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office announced in a press release.

Late Friday morning, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office announced that the deceased inmate was 29-year-old Jeremiah Hall, of Georgetown.

Hall was indicted on July 20 by a Brown County grand jury on one count of trafficking in drugs, a fifth-degree felony, and one count of possessing drug abuse instruments, a first-degree misdemeanor. The drug in question was buprenorphine, which is used to treat opioid addiction.

He was arraigned in court on July 21 and was being held at the Brown County jail.

According to court documents from the Brown County Court of Common Pleas, Hall was previously indicted for trafficking in heroin on April 4, 2014, and on Sept. 16, 2010.

In 2010, Hall was sentenced to two years in the Ohio Department of Corrections and six months in jail, and in 2014, Hall was sentenced to a 10-month prison term.

The original BCSO press release stated that jail staff called the Brown County Communications Center at 8:19 p.m. to notify them that they found Hall hanging in his cell.

Georgetown Fire and EMS responded to the scene and transported Hall to Mt. Orab Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to the press release.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has opened an investigation on the death. The sheriff’s office declined to comment further, asking that all further inquiries go to BCI.

Hall was listed with a Cincinnati address in the most recent indictment, via the court of common pleas, though the BCSO press release states he is from the Georgetown area.

This is the second death by hanging at the Brown County jail since 2013. Zachary Goldson, then 24 years old, died in his Brown County jail cell on Oct. 5, 2013.

Brown County coroner Dr. Judith Varnau ruled Goldson’s death a homicide, but both the Montgomery County coroner and a Brown County grand jury ruled it a suicide.

No determination on Hall’s death has been made. The Brown County coroner’s office declined to comment.
