‘One fun evening’

A Back to School Bash will take place next Friday during HUBA’s First Friday event for the month of August.

The bash will include an inflatable bouncy house and slide, a D.J., face-painting by Hillsboro High School cheerleaders, and an “impromptu magic show,” according to Joe Mahan, president of HUBA (Hillsboro Uptown Business Association).

He added that there will also be “balloon artists strolling about, doing their thing.”

The Hillsboro United Methodist Church will be serving a kid and wallet-friendly meal, Mahan said. The meal will include hot dogs, a bag of chips, a brownie or cookies, and a drink. The cost will be about $4.

However, the “big thing,” according to Mahan, is a giveaway of 20 stocked backpacks.

Parents or guardians can fill out entry forms at each of the participating retailers in uptown Hillsboro that evening for each of their school age children in attendance at the event. Only one backpack will be awarded per child’s name drawn. However, parents can enter their kids’ names multiple times to “increae their odds,” Mahan said.

He added that the giveaway “worked out well last year.”

Mahan also said that items that are not donated are purchased outright by HUBA. He added that HUBA is “always looking for donations and sponsors.”

This year marks the second that HUBA has held a Back to School Bash during August. Mahan described the event as a “little get-together for kids.”

“What kid doesn’t like … strutting their stuff to music,” or playing in a bouncy house, or getting their face painted, Mahan said.

The goal of the event, he added, is for people to come together and have fun, to give back to the community by helping 20 kids with free backpacks, and to encourage people to “see what the uptown has to offer.”

He said it will be “one fun evening before going back to school.”

The Aug. 7 Back to School Bash begins at 5 p.m. and lasts until around 8 p.m. Mahan added that most of the activities will be held near Governor Foraker Place.

Looking ahead, Mahan said HUBA’s First Friday event for September will be a “Cruise ‘in the ‘Boro” cruise-in and homecoming event. The local band Blue Steel will perform.
