Lady Lions too much for McClain

The Fairfield Lions varsity girl’s soccer team was impressive in their season opener Monday night when they traveled to Greenfield and handily defeated McClain 14-5.

Juniors Carly Arnold and Abigail Newkirk both registered hat-tricks on the night to lead Fairfield’s scoring in the lop-sided non-league victory.

“Carly and Abigail both really stepped up offensively knowing they have to pick up some of the scoring that we lost from last season,” Fairfield Coach Sam Spargur said “I was able to change some formations and use some different combinations and it really seemed to work so I’m really proud of our girls effort tonight.”

“Aubrey Drabik also did a real nice job at the goal for us.”

Fairfield led 6-1 at the half behind the efforts of Arnold and Newkirk who scored five of the Lady Lions six first half goals. Lyndee Spargur had the other score for Fairfield.

McClain’s lone first half score came on a goal by Kelli Uhrig at the 38:08 mark of the opening period.

The Lady Lions continued to add to their advantage in the second half when they out-scored McClain 8-4. Grace Shope, Arnold, and Newkirk got a couple of goals each and Lyndee Spargur and Shaynelle Turner added single goals in the second half.

The Lady Tigers saw junior Taylor Polley score four second period goals but it would be far too little too late.

“We came out flat tonight and looked really tired with not much enthusiasm which you need to win games,” McClain Coach Shawn Peterman said “We’re a much better technical team than that and we’ve worked very hard in practice on that aspect of the game but I just didn’t see it tonight.”

“It’s very early in the season and we still have fourteen games to finish out and like I’ve said before there are eleven girls on that field and they really need to work hard and come together as one unit.”

McClain (0-2) travels to Clinton Massie Thursday, August 27th for another tough S.C.O.L. match-up.
