Lynchburg volleyball defeats Peebles and Ripley

The Lady Mustangs of Lynchburg-Clay were able to complete a 3-1 week last week with win at Peebles on Thursday night and at Ripley on Friday.

For the Peebles game, the Lady Mustangs won the first set 25-23, but Shelby Marshall injured her ankle and the team lost both the second and third sets 25-21 and 25-18 respectively.

“When [the injury to Marshall] happened, we got distracted and lost some of our confidence,” Lynchburg coach Mark Faust said after the game. “I really challenged our seniors to take charge during the 4th set. I told Hannah Magie and Kylie Camp that it was their time to lead and that we needed everything they had. Both responded. Hannah took over offensively, finishing with 26 kills. She really put the team on her back when we needed her to. Kylie Camp contributed as well, finishing with 12 kills. The two seniors really stepped up for us when we needed a win. The rest of team buckled down and won the 4th set 25-15 and went on to win the 5th 15-13.”

On Friday, the Lynchburg girls defeated their Southern Hills Athletic Conference opponent Ripley in three straight sets 25-9, 25-10, and 25-14.

“This was a really grueling week for us,” said coach Faust. “We played four matches, with away games on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. I was glad to get through the week. The team was a little tired on Friday, but we played well enough to win.

“Brittany Ernst has been very reliable as our libero. She had major elbow surgery back in January and she hasn’t missed a practice. She just keeps grinding it out.

“Makayla Creed and Hannah Morgan are getting better each week as our setters. The girls are learning how to win. We have already eclipsed last year’s win total and we’re hoping to win a few more this year. Overall, we like where we are. Hopefully we can peak about the time the tournament starts.”

The Lady Mustangs are now 7-7 overall and 4-3 in the SHAC and will host league opponent Fairfield on Tuesday night.
